I love making new dishes, I love shrimp. However, I’ve never cooked prawns before. They’re bigger but not that much different save only that the cook time is slightly longer by like a minute or two. Regardless, we got a hold of some good prawns and I made a tasty homemade curry to cook with it and I’m sharing that here. This serves about 4-6.
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb. prawns in their shell
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tsp garlic, puree
- 1 tsp ginger, puree
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tbs. oil
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp cumin powder
- 2 tsp chili powder (optional)
- 1/4 tsp turmeric
- a bunch of cilantro, chopped
- 2 medium yellow onions
- chili powder to taste, optional
- salt to taste

1. Clean prawns by cutting off the head, feet and feelers. Make a cut down the back of the prawn and remove the black vein which is their digestive track. I kept the prawn in it’s shell. It will help to lock in a lot of flavor in the prawn. Set aside.

2. In a non stick pan, add oil heat at medium high. Sauté onions for 2-3 minutes. Add garlic and ginger. Cook for another 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Add tomatoes and 1/2 of the cilantro and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
4. Next, add all the spices, except the the garam masala, and add the water. Mix and cook for about 1-2 minutes. Mix thoroughly.

5. Add the coconut milk and continue to mix and cook for 2-3 minutes.

6. When mixture is bubbling, add the prawns and gently cook for 3-4 minutes.

7. Now add the garam masala and mix thoroughly. You can add more cilantro to the pot. After 4 minutes, turn off hear and cover the pot for a 2-3 minutes. You can make the dish spicy by adding chili powder.
The dish is ready to serve. You can serve with rice but I made some linguine noodles and it worked well. Add some fresh cilantro and enjoy. I hope you give this a try if you are a fan of curry dishes. I always prefer to make it myself than to use a premade curry powder or sauce. Thank you again for stopping by and Buen Provecho!
