I love the bloomin’ onion. It’s been a favorite since I tried it more than a decade ago. Of course, it’s deep fried and not the healthiest thing to eat. Thankfully, I can replicate this without deep frying it. Another reason to love my instant pot air fryer lid. Here’s my version of this recipe.
- 1 large yellow or white onion (yellow is best but I didn’t have any!)
- 3 large eggs
- 1 tbs water
- 1/2 cup plain bread crumbs
- 1/2 cup flour
- 2 tsp. Paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- Spray oil
Dipping Sauce:
- 2/3 cup mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp ketchup
- 2 tsp horseradish
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
1. Beat eggs in a bowl. Set aside. Mix breadcrumbs, flour and seasonings together on another bowl. Set aside.
2. Make sauce ahead of time whisking all ingredients together. Refrigerate.

3. Cut a small flat spot on the top end of the onion. Remove the outer skin layer. Place the onion root side up on a cutting board. With a sharp knife, start about 1/2 inch from the root make a clean slice downward. Turn another quarter turn and make another clean slice downward. Repeat two more times. You should have four sections. Now cut three to four equal spaced cuts downward in each of those four sections. You should have 16 equal slices. Gently turn over the onion and gently fan out the sections. Usually, a yellow onion works best but I had a white one and it was still pretty good.

4. Dip onion into flour/breadcrumb mix. Make sure you cover all petals and shake off any excess.
5. Dip onion into egg mix making sure it is completely coated in the egg. Now dip again into the
flour/breadcrumb mix and try to cover completely in between all the onions layers/petals.

6. Spray you air fryer basket and place the gently place onion inside. Use the spray oil and coat the
onion.

7. Place lid and set to air fry temp at 375 degrees and timer for 20-25 minutes. When timer beeps half way through cooking process, spray more oil onto the onion. Cook until golden brown. Some cooking times may vary.
8. Allow to cool before removing onion using tongs, gently remove onion and place on plate.

Serve with dipping sauce. Adding the spray really helps to make it crispy and making the sauce ahead of time allows for the flavors to marry together, making taste even better. So if your a fan of the blooming onion but want to cut out the excess oils, I hope you give this a try. Thank you for stopping by Enjoy and Buen provecho!! 😊
